Pay attention means more than just listen to words, it means watch actions. Different people have different styles and desires, so try to cater to the style of that particular person – instead of trying to speak to them in your language, speak to them in theirs.
Timing is a very important skill, use it by paying attention.
If someone is ready to go to a party to celebrate, chances are they don't want to talk about their life, their goals, or whether they're on track with their new year's resolution – they’re focused on partying, or whatever else they may be up to. So check in with them to see if they have time, and if it’s a good time.
Real conversations require two – two to be generous, vulnerable, honest, and to put the facades aside. A lot of people have difficulty with this, so build some trust first, before attempting to dig deep.
