01/28 REAL TALK DEFINITIONS: January 2008 - Vulnerable

Every month we at Real Talk will redefine a word according to how we see it should be used. You'll see us twisting words with negative connotations and giving them positive definitions. Last month the word was Contagious. This month the word is Vulnerable.

What does it mean to be vulnerable?

In the post about the 3 Keys to Talking 4 Real, one of the things I referred to at the end of the post was an ability to be vulnerable.

Vulnerable in a way such that you are present and aware, but also open.

Here's the dictionary definition of Vulnerable: (from Dictionary.com)

–adjective
1. capable of or susceptible to being wounded or hurt, as by a weapon: a vulnerable part of the body.
2. open to moral attack, criticism, temptation, etc.: an argument vulnerable to refutation; He is vulnerable to bribery.
3. (of a place) open to assault; difficult to defend: a vulnerable bridge.

This is the definition most people live by. This is why we run at the very sight of a possibility that we may need to be vulnerable. We run from love, we run from opportunity, we run from success and anything else that may require us to open ourselves up a bit to expand. And looking at the definition, I can understand why.

Here's the Real Talk definition of Vulnerable:
1. Removing my guard,
2. Exposing my fear, and
3. Exploring my imperfections.

It's just that simple.

Exercise: Take this into your life and see what it like to be vulnerable with this empowering context, instead of the other visualization that you'll be susceptible to being hurt. Be vulnerable as an exploration of yourself, and exposing that which you're afraid of so that it can no longer stop you in whatever you're up to.

Then of course, be sure to comment and let us know how it's working out.

It's a great day! Enjoy!
